[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Tensions are escalating between a shareholder group and the labor union of Samsung Electronics over the union’s planned general strike.

According to authorities on April 26, a shareholder organization, the Korea Shareholder Activism Group, has filed to hold a rally on May 21 near the residence of Chairman Lee Jae-yong in Hannam-dong, Seoul. The protest, themed “restoring shareholder rights,” is expected to last about 90 minutes with around 30 participants.

On the same day and at the same location, the Samsung Electronics union’s joint struggle committee plans to stage a large-scale rally starting at 1 p.m., suggesting a direct confrontation between the two sides.

The union previously held a mass rally of about 40,000 workers at its Pyeongtaek site on April 23, demanding that 15% of operating profit be distributed as uncapped performance bonuses.

The shareholder group has argued that such demands are excessive and could undermine shareholder value, signaling a growing conflict between labor and investors.
