[Alpha Biz= Kim Sangjin] U.S. President Donald Trump has postponed his plan to impose a 25% tariff on Mexico for one month, just one day before the measure was set to take effect. This decision follows an agreement in which Mexico promised to deploy soldiers near the U.S.-Mexico border to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
On Monday (local time), Trump announced the decision on his social media platform, Truth Social. He revealed that he had spoken with Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, and she agreed to deploy 10,000 soldiers immediately along the border. These troops will specifically target the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants into the U.S.
Trump also stated, "We have agreed to suspend the planned tariffs for a month, effective immediately," and expressed his eagerness to participate in further negotiations to solidify the deal between the two nations. He added that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross would lead the negotiations with senior representatives from Mexico.
Earlier, on June 1, Trump signed an executive order under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports. He cited trade deficits, illegal immigration, and fentanyl trafficking as the reasons for the tariffs. The order was set to take effect on July 4 but has now been delayed by a month following the last-minute diplomatic resolution between the two countries.
Trump also mentioned that he was in talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, continuing negotiations just before the tariffs were scheduled to be imposed.
