[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung Electronics is going to produce the next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor of Canadian semiconductor startup 'Tenstorent'.

Tenstorrent said, "We chose Samsung Foundry to bring the next generation AI chiplet to the market." The semiconductor is known as 'Quasar'. It will be produced through the 4-nano (SF4X) process at the Taylor plant, which Samsung Electronics is building in Texas, USA.

Chiplets are made of one chip after separating each function from a semiconductor chip and manufacturing it separately with a small chip. It is known to be more productive than conventional methods of cutting wafers and is used for high-performance computers, graphics cards, and servers.

TenStorrent is a Canadian AI semiconductor design (fablis) company established in 2016.

TenStorrent has mainly produced semiconductors and intellectual property rights (IP) for data centers, and has recently been knocking on the door of the automotive AI chip market. It is also one of several startups that challenge NVIDIA, which dominates the AI semiconductor market.

Samsung Electronics' foundry division entered into an alliance with TenStorrent in July when it launched an AI chip R&D project in collaboration with TenStorrent. In August, it also participated in attracting Tenstorrent investment led by Hyundai and Kia through venture capital under Samsung Electronics.
