[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner held at the Washington Hilton on April 25 (local time) descended into chaos when a 31-year-old man, identified as Cole Thomas Allen, stormed the venue armed with a shotgun. While the incident may appear to reflect the broader issue of gun violence in the United States, it also exposed deeper vulnerabilities and contradictions at the heart of the second-term administration of Donald Trump.

The most striking scene was what many described as an “escape show” by top officials. As gunshots rang out, senior figures who had championed “America First” and a strong national posture reacted in disarray. J. D. Vance was among the first to leave the stage under security guidance, while Melania Trump reportedly took cover under a table even before her husband reacted.

President Trump himself initially hesitated, reportedly mistaking the noise for a dropped tray, before stumbling during the evacuation. Key national security officials, including Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth, took approximately 150 seconds to exit the venue, further underscoring what critics described as a lack of coordinated crisis response.

The confusion was compounded by a significant security lapse. Despite the presence of top-ranking officials—including the president, vice president, and senior cabinet members—the event had not been designated a National Special Security Event (NSSE). Metal detectors were reportedly absent at entrances, and the suspect had even booked a hotel room in advance. In a statement left prior to the incident, the suspect mocked security, claiming he could have entered undetected even as a foreign operative carrying heavier weaponry.

In the aftermath, President Trump praised the Secret Service response, while also citing the incident as justification for constructing a dedicated White House banquet facility—remarks that drew criticism.

Amid the turmoil, the most notable display of composure came not from government officials but from a journalist. Weijia Jiang, who was seated next to the president at the time, remained calm during the incident. After senior officials evacuated, she stepped onto the stage to help direct the situation and guide attendees to safety.

She later resumed reporting from the White House lawn and, during a subsequent briefing, posed the first question to the president following the evacuation—demonstrating a commitment to her role even under extraordinary circumstances.

The stark contrast between the disorganized response of national leaders and the composure of a journalist has been widely interpreted as a symbolic reflection of the challenges facing the current administration.
