[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Lisa Su, Chief Executive Officer of AMD, rejected growing concerns in the market about a potential artificial intelligence (AI) bubble, stating firmly, “To be very clear, I don’t believe that is the case.”

In an interview with WIRED on December 4 (local time), Su said that fears surrounding an AI bubble are “somewhat exaggerated,” adding, “Just as today’s AI models are strong, the next generation will be even more advanced.”

Regarding the trend of major tech companies such as Google and Amazon developing their own AI chips, she commented, “What keeps me up at night when looking at the current landscape is how quickly we can innovate.”

AMD has been rapidly closing the gap with Nvidia in the AI chip market. In early November, the company signed a multibillion-dollar AI chip supply agreement with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, and has strengthened its partnership by allowing OpenAI to acquire roughly 10% of AMD shares at a price of one cent per share.

During the interview, Su also said AMD is prepared to pay a 15% tax to the U.S. government to export its lower-spec MI308 chips to China.

AMD’s MI308, along with Nvidia’s H20, has been restricted from export to China since April. AI chip manufacturers including AMD and Nvidia are currently in discussions to remit 15% of their China-related semiconductor revenue to the U.S. government as a condition for export approval.

While AMD derived only 5% of its revenue from China in 2023, the share surged to 24% last year as Chinese tech companies increased AI investment and expanded their purchases of AMD chips.

Some analysts interpret AMD’s willingness to reach a proactive agreement with the U.S. government as an effort to capture market share in China—previously dominated by Nvidia.

Before U.S. export controls were implemented, Nvidia held approximately 95% of the Chinese AI chip market, but its share has since fallen to zero.
