[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Washington, D.C. – May 23, 2025 – Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a minimum 25% tariff on all smartphones imported into the United States, including Apple’s iPhones and Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy series.

During a signing ceremony at the White House on May 23 (local time), Trump was asked whether the new executive order would target specific companies or U.S. firms. He replied, “There will be more [companies] subject to tariffs,” signaling broader trade actions.

“Companies like Samsung and others manufacturing their products overseas will be included—otherwise, it wouldn’t be fair,” he added.

Trump indicated the tariffs could be enforced by the end of June, stating, “We will do it properly by the end of next month.” He emphasized that companies building production facilities in the U.S. would be exempt from the tariffs.

Addressing Apple’s reported plans to shift iPhone manufacturing to India, Trump referenced a conversation with Apple CEO Tim Cook. “It’s fine if Apple builds its factory in India,” Trump said, “but in that case, the company will not be allowed to sell in the U.S. without paying tariffs.”

Trump reiterated that Apple can manufacture smartphones in the United States at a price point affordable for American consumers.
