[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Amazon will cut an additional 16,000 jobs just months after announcing a previous round of layoffs, as the company accelerates its shift toward an AI-centered business strategy.

According to the Financial Times and Reuters, the latest cuts—primarily affecting white-collar roles—follow the elimination of about 14,000 positions announced in October, bringing total job reductions over the past three months to roughly 30,000.

Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president, said advances in AI are reshaping how the company operates, calling the technology the most transformative force since the internet. She noted that Amazon is streamlining its organization by reducing management layers and bureaucracy, while continuing to hire and invest in strategic areas critical to its future.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has previously indicated that workforce reductions may continue as AI-driven innovation expands across the company.

Analysts say the layoffs reflect Amazon’s dual push to strengthen AI capabilities—centered on Amazon Web Services—and rein in costs amid intensifying competition with rivals such as Microsoft and Google.
