[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Micron Technology is set to acquire the Taiwan fab of foundry company PSMC (Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing) for approximately $1.8 billion (around 2.6 trillion KRW) to boost its production capacity.

On January 17 (local time), Micron announced it will purchase PSMC’s P5 manufacturing facility in Tongluo, Miaoli County, Taiwan, in a cash transaction. The acquisition includes a 300mm fab cleanroom spanning 300,000 square feet. Micron expects the facility to significantly increase DRAM output starting in the second half of 2027. The two companies will also strengthen cooperation in back-end processing and DRAM business operations.

While PSMC retains some DRAM operations, its primary focus is on foundry services. The P5 fab has a maximum monthly capacity of 50,000 wafers, but currently only about 8,000 wafers’ worth of equipment is installed, reflecting an operational rate of roughly 20%.

The acquisition of an existing semiconductor fab allows Micron to rapidly respond to rising DRAM demand, as building new facilities from scratch would take significantly longer. Micron’s newly launched project in Syracuse, New York, includes four fabs with a total investment of $10 billion and is scheduled to begin production by 2030.
