[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] The number of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) involving Japanese companies has reached a record high this year, according to a report by Nikkei on the 27th.

Data compiled by Japan-based M&A advisory firm Recof through mid-month show that the number of Japan-related M&A deals — including overseas acquisitions by Japanese companies and purchases of Japanese firms by foreign private equity funds — totaled 4,950 cases this year, already surpassing last year’s previous record of approximately 4,700 deals.

In terms of deal value, total M&A transactions this year have already reached ¥33 trillion (approximately $305 billion), exceeding the previous record of ¥29 trillion set in 2018.

Nikkei noted that growing pressure for corporate reform is driving the surge, with corporate group restructuring and voluntary delistings led by private equity firms increasingly taking place.
