[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] WASHINGTON, D.C. – October 21, 2025 – U.S. President Donald Trump said he plans to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea to discuss ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations, signaling optimism for a potential breakthrough in the U.S.–China trade dispute.

Speaking during a luncheon at the White House Rose Garden, President Trump stated,

“I will be meeting President Xi in Korea, and we will have much to discuss.”
He added, “We have also reached great agreements with Japan, Korea, and Europe — and we could not have done that without tariffs.”

The remarks come as the U.S. prepares to impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese imports starting November 1, in response to China’s restrictions on rare-earth exports. If enacted, the move would raise China’s overall tariff burden to as high as 157%, a significant escalation in the trade confrontation.

Trump expressed confidence that the tariffs would compel Beijing to engage more actively in negotiations, saying he maintains a “good relationship” with Xi and hopes to achieve a “fair deal” that benefits both nations.

“I want President Xi to make a good deal for China — but it has to be a fair one,” he emphasized.

The President also underscored the importance of tariffs as a strategic and economic tool, declaring,

“Tariffs are national security and national wealth. We have collected hundreds of billions of dollars through them.”

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to review the legality of the administration’s tariff measures. Trump noted,

“Based on the law, we should prevail.”
