[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun & Lee Hyung Jin] A South Korean company has been confirmed to have completely overtaken the world's leading firm in a key segment of advanced semiconductor processes. This development is particularly shocking as the field has been dominated by Japanese companies for decades.

According to a comprehensive report by AlphaBiz on the 27th, TSMC and other companies have recently finalized the adoption of EO Technics' next-generation laser for the production of AI semiconductors in their 3nm processes.

The adopted next-generation laser from EO Technics is reported to be used for picosecond (one trillionth of a second) and femtosecond (one quadrillionth of a second) grooving in TSMC's advanced processes.

An insider familiar with TSMC's operations told AlphaBiz, "After careful consideration, TSMC has selected EO Technics as its exclusive partner in the laser field. Japan's Disco failed to secure the necessary technology and did not qualify for the official bidding."

According to global OSAT companies, Apple has begun using this picosecond technology in the production of the world's first M4 chips.

Nvidia is expected to apply it in the B100 chips slated for production in the second half of this year, and Broadcom and Qualcomm are also reported to be adopting this technology.

A representative from a global OSAT company stated, "It's true that Apple has applied EO Technics' picosecond technology," adding, "It is understood that Disco has not secured picosecond or femtosecond technology."

The top three global OSAT companies responsible for the final stages of semiconductor production are Amkor Technology, ASE Group, and STATS ChipPAC.
