알파경제 - U.S. and EU Block Chinese Firms from Submarine Cable Projects over Security Concerns

[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The United States and the European Union (EU) have taken strong measures to prevent Chinese companies from participating in submarine cable projects, citing risks of confidential information leakage and national security threats.



The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced earlier this month that it would completely block Chinese firms from joining domestic submarine cable projects. The FCC explained that submarine cable systems play a critical role in America’s artificial intelligence (AI) and next-generation technology leadership, adding that restricting Chinese participation is essential for building secure infrastructure.




Similarly, the European Commission recently recommended the gradual phase-out of so-called “high-risk vendors,” including Huawei and ZTE, from the submarine cable sector. Taiwan has also adopted strict localization measures, mandating that more than 60% of the products used in state-led offshore wind farm projects be sourced domestically.



These moves reflect growing global concerns that Chinese companies could exploit submarine cable networks to collect sensitive data and compromise national security.
