[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] China has strongly objected to the European Union’s move to exclude Chinese telecommunications equipment makers Huawei and ZTE from regional mobile networks.
He Yongqian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce, said on January 22 that China “expresses serious concern” over a draft cybersecurity law recently unveiled by the European Commission.
“The EU has designated certain Chinese companies as high-risk suppliers without any factual basis and is restricting their participation in 5G network construction,” He said. “China firmly opposes the EU’s discriminatory practices against Chinese companies and its misguided approach of politicizing and overstretching economic and trade issues under the banner of security.”
As part of its new cybersecurity legislation, the European Commission is seeking to mandate that EU member states remove Huawei, ZTE, and other Chinese firms from their mobile telecommunications networks.
