[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SEOUL, Oct. 17 — Hanwha Ocean issued an official apology on Thursday following a fatal accident at its Geoje shipyard that resulted in the death of a subcontractor employee.

According to company and police reports, the incident occurred at around 10:50 a.m. when a steel structure used as a work platform being installed by a crane toppled over and struck a worker in his 60s.

The victim was immediately transported to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead at 11:43 a.m. the same day.

Following the accident, all operations at the Geoje shipyard were suspended.

In a statement released under the name of CEO Kim Hee-cheol, Hanwha Ocean expressed its deepest condolences and pledged to conduct a thorough investigation, enhance its safety management system, and take all necessary measures to prevent future incidents.

“We sincerely apologize for the tragic accident at our Geoje shipyard that resulted in the death of a subcontractor employee,” the company said.
“Work was immediately halted and authorities were notified as soon as the accident occurred. We are fully cooperating with relevant agencies to determine the exact cause and are committed to supporting the bereaved family.”

Hanwha Ocean further emphasized that it will “make every effort to identify the root causes, strengthen safety management, and prevent any recurrence.”

This latest incident comes just a month after a similar fatal accident at the same shipyard, where a foreign supervisor from a Brazilian shipowner died following the collapse of a ship structure.
