[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) on Dec. 23 issued an apology following a fatal workplace accident at its Geoje shipyard, acknowledging shortcomings in its safety management.
In a statement released under the name of CEO Choi Sung-an, the company expressed condolences, saying, “We sincerely pray for the deceased and extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved family during this difficult time,” adding that SHI “failed to fully fulfill its responsibility for safety management.”
The accident occurred at around 3 p.m. on Dec. 22, when a site supervisor preparing for dust removal work inside the tank of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier fell from a height of approximately 20 meters. The worker was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries.
Following the incident, SHI ordered an immediate suspension of all work on the vessel involved. The company also announced that it would halt operations across the entire shipyard and conduct special safety training as part of its response.
