[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Hyundai Motor Group has won a trademark dispute with LG Electronics, which has the name of Genesis' top sedan model, the G90.
According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) on the 7th, Hyundai Motor received a verdict on the cancellation of the 'G90 trademark' held by LG Electronics on the 27th of last month. Article 119 paragraph 1 of the Trademark Act stipulates that trademark registration may be revoked if a trademark holder fails to use a registered trademark in Korea for more than three years without justifiable reasons.
Since January 2016, Hyundai Motor has owned the automobile-related G90 trademark and LG Electronics has owned the electronics-related trademark. The trademarks held by LG Electronics are rights that can be used for smartphones, wireless headsets, rechargeable batteries, battery chargers, digital cameras, 3D glasses, watches, electronic watches, and computers.
LG Electronics' G90 trademark has been terminated due to the Korean Intellectual Property Office's decision. It is known that LG Electronics did not take any action even though it was able to submit legitimate reasons, such as proving that it used the trademark to protect its trademark rights.
The Genesis brand's first car, the G90, was first released as a model called the EQ900. Since then, it has been named G90 in time for the launch of the partial change (facelift) model in November 2018.
