40% of Domestic Stockholders Own Samsung Electronics, with Large Shareholders in Gangnam, Seoul

[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] As of the end of last year, 40% of domestic stockholders held shares in Samsung Electronics, and the largest stockholders were men over the age of 50 living in the Gangnam district of Seoul.


According to data released by the Korea Securities Depository on Monday, there were 14.23 million stockholders among the 2,687 listed companies as of December. Of these, 14.1 million were individual investors, accounting for 99.1% of the total, while corporations and foreign investors made up 0.4% and 0.2%, respectively. The total number of shares held by individual investors was 58 billion, with an average of 5.79 different stocks and 4,112 shares per person.


Among KOSPI-listed stocks, Samsung Electronics had the highest number of shareholders, with 5.67 million individual investors holding shares, which accounts for 40.2% of all individual investors. Kakao came in second with 1.69 million shareholders, followed by Naver (907,445), LG Energy Solution (796,061), and POSCO Holdings (782,520). On the KOSDAQ, EcoPro BM (552,604) and EcoPro (441,779) had the largest number of shareholders.


In terms of residence, age, and gender, the largest group of stockholders were men over 50 living in the Gangnam district of Seoul. Among them, 50s men in Gangnam (34,714 individuals) owned 1.39 billion shares, while men in their 60s (20,187 individuals) held 1.02 billion shares, ranking first and second. 

 

 

The average number of shares per person was higher for men in their 60s (49,643 shares) compared to those in their 50s (40,066 shares). Additionally, 70s men in Gangnam (10,781 individuals) held 531 million shares, with an average of 49,264 shares per person. The largest number of stockholders based on location, age, and gender were women in their 50s (44,799 individuals) and men in their 40s (42,943 individuals) from Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.
