[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Hyundai Card Vice Chairman Chung Tae-young has won a first-round legal battle against his siblings in a lawsuit seeking a portion of his late mother's inheritance.
On the 10th, the Seoul Central District Court’s Civil Division 48 (Presiding Judge Kim Do-kyun) ruled in favor of Chung, who filed a lawsuit against his younger brother and sister, demanding the return of approximately 200 million KRW ($150,000) in inheritance. The court ordered his brother to pay 32.38 million KRW and his sister to pay 111.22 million KRW to Chung.
The case revolves around "legitimate portion restitution," a legal action that allows heirs to reclaim a portion of an inheritance if the deceased unfairly distributed assets, giving more to certain heirs than legally permitted.
However, the court sided with the siblings in a separate lawsuit concerning the ownership of a property in Seoul’s Dongsoong-dong neighborhood, meaning Chung will have to share part of the property with them.
Their mother passed away in February 2019, leaving a will from March 2018 that granted 1 billion KRW worth of land and financial assets entirely to her daughter and second son. Chung raised doubts about the will’s authenticity, claiming the handwriting was inconsistent with his mother’s usual style and questioning her mental state when the document was written. He subsequently filed the lawsuit in August 2020 to claim his rightful portion of the inheritance.
Chung’s father, the late Jeong Kyung-jin, founder of Jongno Academy, had also joined the lawsuit but passed away in November 2020.
