[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] LS and bipolar material company L&F will start construction of a joint plant to produce precursor, a key battery material, at Saemangeum Industrial Complex in Jeonbuk within this year. It plans to invest about 1 trillion won to operate the plant from 2025.

LS Group, which announced its entry into the battery, electric vehicle, and semi-conductor business last year, has entered the battery material business in earnest. It is said that it has laid the foundation for localizing core battery materials based on domestic technology and capital.

LS and L&F will each vote on an investment plan to build a precursor joint plant in Saemangeum at the board meeting on the 16th. The total amount of investment is about 1 trillion won, and ㈜LS is in final coordination on how to take 51% of the stake. The precursor production estimated at the investment amount is over 80,000 tons per year.

The precursor produced in this factory is delivered to the cathode material plant of L&F. Considering that 1 ton of precursor is needed when manufacturing 1 ton of anode material, L&F will be able to manufacture more than 60% of the current production size of the anode material (130,000 tons per year) as a domestic precursor. Nickel sulfate needed for the production of electric balls is supplied by LS MnM (formerly LS Nikko Copper), a copper refining company.
