[AlphaBiz = Reporter Kim Young-taek] South Korea's Ministry of Employment and Labor announced on Tuesday that it has imposed 92 million KRW (approximately $77,000) in fines and initiated four legal actions against Coupang Logistics Service (CLS) for violations of industrial safety and labor regulations.
The ministry conducted a comprehensive labor inspection of CLS, focusing on three key areas: occupational safety and health, basic labor compliance, and potential illegal subcontracting of delivery drivers.
The investigation, which aimed to address multiple labor-related issues raised at CLS worksites, covered 82 locations, including the company’s headquarters, sub-hubs, delivery camps, and courier operation centers.
The inspection was carried out over approximately one month, from October 8 to November 14, 2023, with special attention to vulnerable periods in delivery operations such as nighttime (8 PM–12 AM) and early morning (4 AM–8 AM).
Violations of industrial safety laws were found at 41 sites, leading to four cases referred for legal action, 53 fines totaling 92 million KRW, and 34 corrective orders.
Additionally, ministry officials noted other violations, such as delays in reporting workplace accidents, failure to provide mandatory training for special employment workers, and failure to conduct special health examinations for nighttime workers.
