Rice Consumption in South Korea Hits a 40-Year Low, Continuing Decline

[Alpha Biz= Kim Sangjin] Rice Consumption per Person Hits Record Low for the 40th Consecutive Year in South Korea

 


According to the '2024 Rice Consumption Survey Results' released by the Statistics Korea on Thursday, the annual rice consumption per person for the 2023-2024 crop year (from November 1, 2023 to October 31, 2024) was 55.8kg, a 1.1% decrease (0.6kg) from the previous year.


This marks the 40th consecutive year of decline since 1984, when the figure was 130.1kg, and the lowest level since records began in 1963 (105.5kg). The consumption rate dropped rapidly in the 1990s, dipping below 100kg in 1998 (99.2kg) and staying in the 50kg range since 2019.


The decline rate exceeded 1% for the first time in three years, following a decrease of 1.4% in 2021 and a drop of 0.4% in 2022 and 0.6% in 2023.


The average daily rice consumption per person was also at a record low of 152.9g, marking a 1.1% decrease (1.7g) from the previous year.
