[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] South Korea’s Ministry of Justice has refuted claims made by the legal team of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, currently held at Seoul Detention Center, that he is being denied access to outdoor exercise.

In a press release issued on July 13, the ministry stated,

“While former President Yoon is being treated in accordance with correctional regulations applicable to all inmates, certain accommodations have been made to minimize unnecessary contact with other detainees.”

Regarding outdoor activity, the ministry explained:

“Inmates are allowed outdoor exercise for up to one hour during working hours. Former President Yoon is receiving the same amount of outdoor time and frequency as general inmates.”

However, the ministry clarified that Yoon’s exercise is conducted individually, not with other inmates, due to security and privacy concerns.

“Except for days when legal visits or court appearances conflict with the schedule, outdoor activity is being provided as normal,” it added.

In response to inquiries about inmate personal funds, the ministry stated:

“Each inmate is allowed to keep up to KRW 4 million in personal funds. If the amount exceeds that limit, the excess is deposited under the inmate’s name in an account at the facility’s designated bank and returned upon release.”
