[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] SK Hynix's DRAM production is reportedly on a sharp decline this month amid global oversupply of memory chips.
The reduction effect, which has been carried out since the fourth quarter of last year, is showing.
In April, SK Hynix's total DRAM production was estimated to have decreased by about 10% from the previous year, and the decline is expected to increase by up to 20% in the second half of this year.
According to the industry on the 12th, SK Hynix's DRAM production (based on wafers) is currently about 400,000 units per month on average, down about 10% from the previous year (460,000 units). It is analyzed that the wafer input has been greatly adjusted since the fourth quarter of last year along with the announcement of production cuts.
SK Hynix is known to have started to control supply by lowering the operation rate of its DRAM production base in Wuxi, China, and its M14 production line in Icheon by more than 20%.
SK Hynix began to reduce wafer input in earnest between October and November last year. Earlier, SK Hynix decided to lower the amount of DRAM input at all workplaces except the Icheon M16 production line.
Market research firm Omdia predicts that SK Hynix's average monthly wafer production will be 380,000 units per month in the second half of this year, down 18-20% from the previous year.
