[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Prosecutors on the 26th launched an additional raid on Woori Bank's headquarters in connection with former special prosecutor Park Young-soo, who has been embroiled in allegations of the so-called "5 billion club."
The Anti-Corruption Investigation Department 1 (Senior Prosecutor Eom Hee-joon) at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office is conducting a raid on Woori Bank's headquarters, office and the residence of former independent counsel Park Young-soo, former chairman of the board of directors of Woori Bank, and lawyer Yang Jae-sik, who was a special prosecutor during the "special prosecutor Park Young-soo" in 2016. On the 30th of last month, the prosecution also raided the residence and office of former special prosecutor Park and lawyer Yang, as well as Woori Bank's headquarters.
Former independent counsel Kim Man-bae, then major shareholder of Hwacheon Daeyu Asset Management, is suspected of receiving 5 billion won in return for their cooperation in forming a consortium by excluding Buguk securities in the process of preparing for the Daejang-dong development project while serving as chairman of Woori Bank's board of directors in 2014.
The prosecution believes that lawyer Yang also participated in the process by securing statements from Daejang-dong officials that lawyer Yang was promised 20 billion won from the Daejang-dong gang and reported it to former special prosecutor Park.
"I understand that when the prosecution raided late last month, it focused on whether former special prosecutor Park Young-soo was involved in decision-making," a Woori Bank official said. "I understand that no charges were found at the time."
