[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SEOUL, June 12 — South Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labor said it will launch a high-intensity investigation into POSCO E&C following a fatal accident at a railway construction site.

The ministry announced on June 11 that it will conduct a search and seizure of the company and carry out nationwide safety inspections across its construction sites after a subcontracted worker in his 30s died on June 9 at the Sinansan Line project in Seoul.

Labor Minister Kim Young-hoon, currently attending the International Labour Organization conference in Geneva, ordered “extraordinary measures” after being briefed on the incident.

The worker fell about 15 meters while performing installation work, marking the latest in a series of fatal accidents linked to the project. Similar incidents in 2024 also resulted in deaths and serious injuries.

Authorities will jointly inspect seven active Sinansan Line construction sites with the transport ministry and conduct surprise inspections at other POSCO E&C projects. A full investigation will seek to determine whether violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act occurred.

The ministry noted that fatalities at POSCO Group construction sites have continued to rise in recent years, raising concerns over workplace safety management.

POSCO E&C issued an apology, expressing condolences to the victim’s family and pledging to strengthen safety measures to prevent further incidents.
