[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Hankook Tire & Technology (Hankook Tire)'s Daejeon plant was shut down due to a fire. The timing of restarting the plant is undecided.
According to fire authorities on the 13th, the fire, which began at Hankook Tire's second plant in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon on the night of the 12th, caught a big fire earlier in the day, but extinguishing work continued throughout the plant throughout the day.
The fire burned down 87,000㎡ of Daejeon Plant 2 and burned all 210,000 tires in Logistics Building 3. Initially, 400,000 tires were reported to have been burned, but fire authorities protected the product by preventing the spread of flames to the second logistics building where 200,000 were stored.
It has been confirmed that Hankook Tire's Daejeon plant has purchased comprehensive property insurance from four non-life insurance companies, including KB Insurance, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance and DB Damage Insurance. The maximum amount of insurance is 300 billion won. Insurance companies are expected to pay insurance premiums as production is inevitable, with the second plant burned down and internal facilities burned.
The Hankook Tire Daejeon plant is the second largest after the Geumsan plant. The Daejeon plant has produced 20 million units, which is about 20% of Hankook Tire's annual production (about 102 million units). Of these, 65% were for export, and 35% were supplied to the domestic finished car industry.
Hankook Tire plans to implement measures such as distributing supplies to other production bases at home and abroad after identifying the exact extent of the damage.
