[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung Electronics has secured international standard technology in the field of "Low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites" in which global telecommunication companies, including Elon Musk's space exploration companies SpaceX and Apple, have jumped in.
In that it is a two-way communication using satellites, it is considered a more advanced technology than one-way communication introduced by Apple in the second half of last year.
Samsung Electronics announced on the 23rd that it has secured 'NTN' standard technology that connects mobile devices and satellites through 5th generation (G) mobile communication. Samsung Electronics explained that using this technology, 5G communication is possible in the distant sea, deep mountains, and in the middle of the desert, where communication as well as network connection was not possible because there was no base station nearby. In addition to simple text messages, it is possible to send and receive large amounts of data such as photos and videos.
Samsung Electronics' technology is expected to grow significantly in overseas markets where telecommunication infrastructure is not developed than in Korea, which has dense telecommunication base stations even in small land areas. It can also be widely used in unmanned aerial vehicles that cannot be reached by ground networks and urban air traffic (UAM) such as flying cars.
