[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] SK IE Technology (SKIET), a manufacturer of battery separators, is set to enter the Chinese electric vehicle battery market in earnest.
SKIET announced on the 1st that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Chinese battery company Sunwoda to strengthen cooperation, including supply of battery separators.
Sunwoda is the ninth largest global battery market share based on SNE Research last year. Major customers of Sunwoda's electric vehicle batteries include Shanghai Motors, Volvo and Volkswagen.
SKIET will supply Sunwoda with separator products produced at its plant in Changzhou, China. This is the first time that SKIET supplies a large amount of battery separators for electric vehicles to Chinese electric vehicle battery manufacturers. SKIET was supplying separators for IT and electronics to Sunwoda Group in China, which expanded its scope to electric vehicle batteries.
Based on MOU, the two companies decided to continue active communication regarding the expansion of supply of separators with technological, quality and price competitiveness. It plans to establish a cooperative relationship in the Chinese electric vehicle market from a strategic and mid- to long-term perspective. It has agreed to continue cooperative relations overseas beyond the Chinese market in the future.
