Its characteristic is that it can greatly increase battery performance compared to existing graphite anode. Based on electric vehicles, the driving distance will increase 1.5 times from 500㎞ to more than 700㎞ on average, and the full charging speed will be reduced to less than 20 minutes.
According to the industry on the 6th, LG Energy Solution and SK On are developing silicon 10% anode-based secondary battery. Both companies are battery companies that supply Hyundai Motor's electric vehicles, and it is highly likely that silicon 10% cathode material batteries will be applied as early as next year for the next electric vehicle model.
A senior industry official said, "With the commercialization of silicon anode, the performance of next-generation electric vehicles can be greatly improved."
Hyundai Motors aims to increase the performance of electric vehicles by continuously increasing the silicon cathode material content of batteries. The mid-term plan aims to increase the proportion of silicon in anode for electric vehicle batteries by 15% sequentially.
The IONIQ series is the first vehicle to be equipped with more than 10% silicon anode battery. So far, the IONIQ series is said to account for 5 to 7 percent of silicon. This is why mileage and charging speed are expected to improve due to improved battery performance of next-generation IONIQs.
Hyundai Motors is strengthening cooperation not only with domestic battery companies but also with various material companies for the application of silicon cathode materials.
Currently, LG Energy Solutions and SK ON are supplying batteries to Hyundai Motor. Silicon cathode materials are expected to be supplied by their partners, large kettle materials, SK Materials, and SKC.
