SEOUL, June 4 — The Democratic Party of Korea is on track to regain control of a majority of Seoul’s district mayor posts in the local elections, marking a sharp reversal from 2022.
As of early vote counting, Democratic Party candidates were leading in more than 20 of Seoul’s 25 districts, compared with just eight victories in the previous election. The People Power Party, which previously dominated with 17 seats, was ahead in only a handful of districts.
The Democratic Party showed strong gains in key swing regions along the Han River, while also making inroads into traditionally conservative areas. The People Power Party retained strength in strongholds such as Gangnam and Seocho.
Analysts attribute the shift to strong support for President Lee Jae-myung early in his term, with voter sentiment favoring the ruling bloc.
In Gyeonggi Province, Democratic Party candidates were also leading in most races, including three of four major cities with populations exceeding one million, signaling broader momentum beyond Seoul.
