[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung SDI will introduce an all-solid-state battery prototype called 'dream battery' in the second half of the year.

At the 53rd anniversary ceremony held at the headquarters in Giheung, Gyeonggi-do on the 29th, Samsung SDI President Choi Yoon-ho (pictured) said, “We have entered a full-fledged implementation phase to get one step closer to the vision set by the company this year.” It has been completed and we are looking forward to producing prototypes in the second half of the year," he said. At the same time, he added, “We are preparing for the development and mass production of next-generation battery products, such as the completion of the circular 46 pi (diameter 46 mm) battery ‘M Line’.”

An all-solid-state battery is a battery in which the 'electrolyte' that transfers ions between the anode and cathode is replaced with a solid from the existing liquid. It is also called 'dream battery' in that the risk of fire is greatly reduced. Currently, in addition to Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solutions and SK On are all concentrating on development and mass production.

The industry evaluates that Samsung SDI is accelerating the mass production of all-solid-state batteries. Since last year, Samsung SDI has consistently stated that it will produce all-solid-state battery pilot samples in the second half of this year, develop mid-to-large-size all-solid-state battery technology in 2025, and mass-produce all-solid-state batteries in 2027.
