[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] T'way Airlines announced on the 24th that its sales and operating profit were tentatively estimated at 286.1 billion won and 19.6 billion won in the second quarter of this year.

Compared to the second quarter of last year, which recorded sales of 93.7 billion won and operating loss of 29.5 billion won, sales more than tripled, and operating profit turned into a surplus.

T'way Airlines explained that it was the first time in 20 years that it posted a surplus in the second quarter, which is considered a traditional off-season in the airline industry, since its establishment in 2003. The move comes as the re-operation of routes in Japan and Southeast Asia, which have continued since last year, and the increase in passenger demand following the launch of new routes at Cheongju Airport this year.

T'way Airlines' cumulative sales in the first half of this year were 644.9 billion won and operating profit was 12.3 billion won. It improved significantly from the same period last year when it recorded sales of 153.4 billion won and operating loss of 68.4 billion won.

T'way Airlines said it plans to continue its positive performance in the second half of the year by expanding its new service and re-operation routes.

T'way Airlines explained that the only introduction of five more aircraft among low-cost carriers (LCCs) in Korea during the COVID-19 period led to improved performance.
