[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Daesang succeeded in developing a high-efficiency production technology for allulose, a natural sweetener that can replace sugar, and will start full-scale production.

Daesang said on the 24th that it has started production at its starch sugar plant in Gunsan after holding a ceremony to mark the completion of a production facility dedicated to allulose. It was completed after about a year and three months of construction and invested about 30 billion won.

Daesang started the starch sugar business in 1965 and became the largest starch sugar company in Korea. As Daesang's know-how and unique technology are concentrated, expectations are high for not only driving sales but also preoccupying the global market.

The Allulose production was pushed to proactively respond to demand for low-calorie sweeteners that have increased due to the Healthy Pleasure craze since the coronavirus pandemic and the global environment in which each country is implementing strong policies such as sugar reduction and sugar tax.

In fact, in 2018, the U.K. introduced a so-called sugar tax, including a tax of 0.18 pounds per liter on beverages containing more than 5 grams of sugar additives per 100ml of beverage. Korea has also drawn attention to Allulose as the next-generation sweetener that will lead the food market in the future by replacing sugar.
