[Apha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, who has strongly opposed Google and Apple's "forced in-app payment" policy, continued to criticize both companies in Korea.
He stressed that Epic Games Store is playing fair as a game distribution platform, saying it does not force the introduction of its payment system.
"The behavior of Apple and Google that benefit more than other participants by exploiting their monopoly is not right," Tim Sweeney said in an on-site interview with 'Unreal Fest 2023' at InterContinental Seoul COEX on the 29th.
In September 2021, the world's first law was passed to prevent app market operators from forcing in-app payments in Korea. In response, he pointed out, "I think it is high that the Korean government has tried to regulate it, but the results are minimal."
"We should not impose fees on services that are not developed and provided directly," he said. "If this practice in the in-app continues, we cannot rule out the possibility of taking the wrong action against all commerce (distribution) within our OS."
Epic Games is filing an anti-trust lawsuit with Apple in the United States. In April, an appeals court in California ruled that Apple's App Store policy did not violate antitrust laws, but that an external payment system should be allowed. Epic Games and Apple plan to appeal.
