[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Enchem, a core electrolyte materials supplier for lithium-ion batteries, has begun validating oxide-based solid-state electrolyte materials and process technologies in collaboration with its solid-state materials affiliate TDL. The initiative aims to secure material performance and process reproducibility—widely seen as key hurdles to the commercialization of solid-state batteries—and to internalize related technologies in stages.

Solid-state batteries, which eliminate liquid electrolytes, are regarded as next-generation technology capable of significantly reducing fire risk while offering both higher energy density and improved stability. Their potential applications extend beyond electric vehicles to areas such as energy storage systems (ESS), drones, and robotics, where safety and performance are critical.

Enchem has built a broad global collaboration network with South Korea’s three major battery makers, as well as leading cell manufacturers in Japan, the United States, and Europe, including CATL, SVOLT, AESC, and Sunwoda. Leveraging this experience in operating global supply chains, the company plans to respond proactively to the industry’s transition toward solid-state batteries. Through its partnership with TDL, Enchem will also enhance the technical maturity of solid-state electrolyte materials and progressively verify their applicability in actual battery systems.

The company is accelerating development of composite electrolytes as well. Centered on its next-generation technology development organization, Enchem is pursuing approaches that combine ceramic-process-based oxide electrolytes with polymer solid electrolytes. The goal is to improve electrolyte performance while ensuring process reproducibility capable of delivering consistent quality in mass-production environments.

Founded in 2012, TDL is a solid-state materials specialist that has focused on solid electrolyte R&D for more than a decade. The company has secured technologies for oxide-based electrolyte materials in powder and sheet forms and has experience developing solid-state battery structures that integrate polymer and oxide electrolytes, as well as polymer-based solid-state technologies.

Notably, TDL became the first company in South Korea to mass-produce solid electrolyte powder and sheet materials and bring them to the commercial supply stage. It is currently supplying samples and conducting performance validation with major global customers.

Market momentum is also building. Semi-solid batteries have entered a phase of capacity expansion in select application areas, while solid-state batteries remain in intense competition at the R&D and pilot validation stages. Global research institutions note that technological maturity, cost competitiveness, and process reproducibility will be decisive factors shaping the pace of market growth.

According to Gaogong Industrial Research Institute, China’s semi-solid battery shipments totaled approximately 7 GWh in 2024. Solid-state battery capacity expansion exceeded 50 GWh in 2025, with effective installed production capacity estimated at around 25 GWh, and is projected to surpass 65 GWh by 2030. Meanwhile, Guosen Securities forecasts that global demand for solid-state batteries will grow from 16.4 GWh in 2025 to 270.8 GWh by 2030.
