[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] A joint research team of LG Energy Solutions and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) announced on July 7 that it has developed a source technology that will overcome the technical challenges of lithium metal batteries, which are attracting attention as next-generation batteries, and boost their performance.

According to LG Ensol and KAIST, a team led by Kim Hee-tak, a professor of biochemical engineering at the Frontier Research Lab (FRL), a joint research center established by the two sides in 2021, has secured technology to enhance the life and performance of lithium metal batteries by preventing lithium corrosion. The findings were also published online on the 23rd of last month in Nature Energy, the world's most prestigious journal in the field of energy, and were recognized for their achievements.

Through this study, the newly developed battery not only solved the corrosion problem, but also greatly reduced the weight of the battery cathode and electrolyte than before, increasing the energy density to reach 900km on a single charge. This is about 50% higher than the mileage of lithium-ion batteries (600km) applied to existing high-performance electric vehicles. It is possible to recharge more than 400 times, so life stability is secured.

In addition to FRL with KAIST, which was established in Korea, LG Ensol operates the Battery Research Center (MEET) and Helmholds Institute of Germany in Europe and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and FRL in the United States.
