[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Hyundai Motor and Kia have joined hands with BMW, General Motors (GM), Honda, Mercedes-Benz and Stellatis to form a "charging alliance" in the U.S. It plans to establish a joint venture to establish a charging network in about 30,000 locations in North America.
Seven automakers, including Hyundai Motor and Kia, said in a joint press release on the 26th (local time) that they will set up a joint venture to build an electric vehicle charging network in North America. They explained, "The goal is to install at least 30,000 high-power charging stations on downtown and highways so that customers can charge it when they need it anytime, anywhere."
The charging station plans to provide CCS, the existing U.S. standard, and NACS connector, Tesla's charging standard, to be used by all electric vehicle customers.
The seven companies plan to open their first charging stations in the U.S. in the summer of 2024 and then expand them to Canada.
The project is said to be modeled after IONITY, an electric vehicle charging company co-founded in Europe by a number of automakers in 2017.
