[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Domestic low-cost carriers (LCCs), which are considering taking part in the acquisition of Asiana Airlines' cargo division, are reportedly conducting in-depth interviews with the European Commission (EC) in January next year.

It is interpreted as a work to examine the impact of the sale of the cargo business division on related industries over the merger between Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, while reflecting the opinions of domestic companies in the review of the merger approval.

According to Maeil Business on the 25th, the EC, which is reviewing whether to conditionally approve the merger between Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, will conduct in-depth interviews with local airlines in January next year. The in-depth interview is part of EC's corporate combination screening process, which is scheduled to be announced in February next year.

In November, Korean Air submitted corrective measures to the EC, including supporting the entry of alternative airlines on four overlapping EU routes, including Paris, Frankfurt, Rome and Barcelona, and the separate sale of Asiana Airlines' cargo business division. Shortly after this, EC announced in an announcement on its website, "We will tentatively conclude a review of the business combination of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines before Feb. 14, 2024."
