[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] The government will check whether there have been any problems with user notices regarding the recent changes in subscription fees for major online video services (OTT) such as YouTube (YouTube Premium) and Netflix.
The Korea Communications Commission announced on the 21st that it will check the details of rate hikes, terms and conditions, and user notices for violations of the Telecommunications Business Act in connection with the recent increase in major OTT rates such as YouTube and Netflix.
YouTube recently raised its YouTube premium price by 43% from 14,450 won per month to 14,900 won per month. Netflix has never explicitly raised subscription fees in recent years. However, the account sharing policy (it is possible to register an additional member rather than a household member for an additional payment of 5,000 won per month) was implemented and the rate was actually raised due to the suspension of new basic membership.
The government prohibits the act of providing telecommunication services in a way that significantly harms the interests of telecommunication users pursuant to Article 50 (prohibited act) of the Telecommunications Business Act and Article 42 of the Enforcement Decree of the same Act, ▲ telecommunication business operators not explaining or notifying important matters such as fees, conditions, and fee discounts of telecommunication services to users. The Korea Communications Commission will check for violations of the regulations.
The Korea Communications Commission said it will switch to a fact-finding investigation if the violation is recognized through a fact-finding inspection and will dispose of it in accordance with related laws if the violation is confirmed to be true.
