[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] The largest labor union within Samsung Electronics, the National Samsung Electronics Union, has initiated collective action through the use of group annual leave.

On the 7th, the National Samsung Electronics Union conducted a "leave strike" by collectively taking annual leave. This marks the first strike in Samsung Electronics' 55-year history.

Previously, on the 29th of last month, the National Samsung Electronics Union had instructed its members across all its sites nationwide to participate in the action by taking a day off. The union, primarily composed of members from the Device Solutions (DS) division, has approximately 28,400 members. It is the largest of the five unions at Samsung Electronics, which collectively have about 120,000 members.

The union decided to strike due to stalled negotiations with the management. Since January, the union and management have been negotiating over wages and performance bonuses but have failed to reach an agreement. Following the breakdown of negotiations on the 28th of last month, no new negotiation schedule has been set. As the negotiations hit a deadlock, the union sought to secure the right to strike through the Central Labor Committee’s decision to stop mediation and a subsequent vote among union members.

The National Samsung Electronics Union did not disclose the exact number of participants in the strike. However, it was reported that the rate of annual leave usage was lower compared to the bridge holiday during Memorial Day last year.
