[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] As of this year, the number of overseas subsidiaries established by 88 Korean conglomerates has surpassed 6,000. According to an analysis by the Korea CXO Institute on the 27th, these conglomerates control a total of 6,166 overseas subsidiaries spread across 129 countries. This marks an increase of 480 subsidiaries compared to last year's 5,686.
In 2024, the 88 conglomerates have 3,318 domestic subsidiaries, with the number of overseas subsidiaries exceeding domestic ones by 2,848.
Hanwha has the highest number of overseas subsidiaries among the surveyed groups, with 824 subsidiaries, an increase of 85 from the previous year. SK follows with 638 overseas subsidiaries.
Samsung ranks third with 563 overseas subsidiaries. Samsung has been reducing its overseas subsidiaries every year since 2018, when it had 663.
The United States is the country with the highest number of Korean overseas subsidiaries, totaling 1,590. This is an increase of 269 from the previous year's 1,321. The proportion of U.S. subsidiaries among the total overseas subsidiaries has been rising, from 18.8% in 2021 to 25.8% this year. This trend indicates that Korean conglomerates consider the U.S. a crucial business market.
China follows with 827 overseas subsidiaries, but its proportion has decreased from 14.9% last year to 13.45% this year, reflecting a 1.5 percentage point drop.
