[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] A fire at a key auto parts manufacturer in Daejeon has raised concerns about potential disruptions to vehicle production at Hyundai Motor Group.

According to industry sources on March 23, Safety Industrial Co., founded in 1953, manufactures and supplies engine valves for automobiles and ships, including to Hyundai Motor and Kia, South Korea’s top two automakers.

Engine valves are critical components that regulate the intake of fuel and air as well as the discharge of exhaust gases, making them essential to vehicle production.

Industry observers warn that Hyundai Motor and Kia, which have relied on a limited number of suppliers including Safety Industrial, may face difficulties in securing parts in the near term.

Hyundai Motor and Kia are currently reviewing inventory levels of engine valves by vehicle model and seeking alternative suppliers to mitigate potential supply disruptions.
