[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Minyoung] LS Cable & System is under investigation by the police for alleged leakage of underwater cable technology to a competing company. On the 14th, LS Cable & System stated, "If illegal activities are confirmed, we will take legal action both civilly and criminally." Meanwhile, the accused competitor, Daehan Cable, asserted on the same day that they already possess the facilities and manufacturing technology for underwater cables.
LS Cable & System, through a document titled 'Explanation Regarding Competitor Technology Leakage,' emphasized that they have invested approximately 1 trillion won over the past 20 years in underwater cable factories and R&D, stating, "The 500kV HVDC underwater cable is a crucial national technology, and any leakage of manufacturing technology and equipment-related matters to other countries could adversely affect national security and the economy."
A representative from LS Cable & System acknowledged, "We became aware of the relevant facts when the police recently notified us to come in for victim interviews." They clarified, "LS Cable & System has not filed a lawsuit, and since the police investigation is ongoing, we cannot disclose detailed information. However, we take seriously the fact that transactions were conducted with (K Construction) and a competitor, and we will monitor the investigation closely."
Additionally, they warned, "If illegal activities are confirmed in the future, we plan to take legal action against the relevant companies."
Regarding the allegations of technology leakage, Daehan Cable issued a statement, asserting, "We selected the company in question through fair competitive bidding among multiple architectural design firms." They clarified, "The design firm did not engage in tasks related to cable equipment or manufacturing technology. The underwater cable production facilities were manufactured and installed through domestic and foreign specialized firms."
Daehan Cable further emphasized their history with underwater cable production, stating, "Since 2009, we have been researching underwater cable factories and production. Since 2016, we have installed underwater cable production facilities at our existing cable factory in Dangjin." They concluded, "In 2017, we successfully produced and delivered internal network underwater cables using these facilities, demonstrating our possession of the necessary technological capabilities for underwater cable production."
