[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] POSCO Future M, the only battery cathode material producer in Korea, converts Chinese raw materials into African ones.

POSCO FutureM signed a contract to import natural graphite, a negative electrode material, from Mozambique through an Australian mining company.

Australian mining company Shira Risosis announced the contract to its stock exchange on the 1st.

The contract quantity will be 24,000 to 26,000 tons per year, and the contract period will be six years after the customer's request, but the request will be made by 2025 at the latest.

The scale of introduction is 40% of POSCO FutureM's annual production capacity of 74,000 tons of natural graphite cathode materials.

Until now, POSCO Future M has imported spherical graphite from China and used it to produce cathode materials.

However, due to the U.S.-China hegemony, supply chain problems are being raised, such as the U.S. imposing sanctions on Chinese battery materials and China controlling natural graphite exports.

An official at POSCO Holdings said at a ground-breaking ceremony for the anode material plant in Gwangyang last month that the use of African graphite, not from China, could avoid U.S. sanctions.
