[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] SEOUL, June 1, 2026 — A man in his 60s has been placed under arrest on charges of attempted murder after allegedly attacking two employees with a weapon at an office of LG Electronics, authorities said.
The suspect, identified only as A, is an employee of a partner company working at LG Electronics’ Magok facility in Seoul. A court approved his detention, citing concerns that he may attempt to flee.
The incident occurred on May 27, when A allegedly wielded a weapon against two company staff members, attempting to kill or seriously injure them. Police initially booked him on charges of aggravated assault but later upgraded the charges to include attempted murder for one of the victims, based on evidence suggesting intent to kill.
Appearing for a detention hearing, the suspect apologized to the victims but claimed he committed the attack out of anger over what he described as a dismissal notice. He also alleged issues with LG Electronics’ contractor management system.
However, the victims denied the allegations, stating that no such mistreatment had occurred. They said the suspect had struggled with his workload, and any request for reassignment had been made through his employer.
In a separate statement, LG Electronics said it had requested the contractor company to replace the individual on May 12 and held a meeting with the suspect and a partner company executive on the day of the incident. The company emphasized that no termination notice had been issued, but rather a reassignment to a different project was proposed.
LG Electronics also said there was no evidence supporting claims of workplace harassment.
With the suspect now in custody, police plan to focus on determining the exact motive behind the attack as conflicting accounts continue between the parties involved.
