[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] SEOUL, June 1, 2026 — Samsung Display is set to become the first in the world to mass-produce next-generation 8.6-generation IT OLED panels, a move expected to accelerate the adoption of OLED displays across AI PCs and premium notebook markets.

Industry sources said the company has effectively completed preparations for its 8.6-gen OLED production line at its Asan campus and plans to begin full-scale mass production in July. Yields have reportedly exceeded 90%, a level typically considered stable for commercial production.

The 8.6-generation OLED technology utilizes mother glass substrates more than twice the size of those used in conventional 6th-generation smartphone OLED panels. This enables the production of a significantly higher number of panels for laptops and tablets from a single substrate, improving both manufacturing efficiency and cost competitiveness.

Samsung Display previously announced an investment of approximately KRW 4.1 trillion to build the production line, with a planned monthly capacity of 15,000 substrates.

Apple is expected to be a key customer, with panels likely to be supplied for next-generation MacBook Pro models. The technology is also anticipated to expand into iPads, AI-powered PCs, and broader premium notebook segments.

Beyond larger substrate sizes, the new panels incorporate advanced low-power technologies. These include a two-stack (tandem) OLED structure, which enhances both brightness and lifespan, and a full-oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) system, offering superior power efficiency and display uniformity compared to conventional LTPS-based designs.

The shift comes as power efficiency becomes increasingly critical in next-generation computing devices, particularly with the rise of generative AI and on-device AI processing, which significantly increases power consumption. Industry experts note that future competitiveness in AI PCs will depend not only on processors but also on battery efficiency and thermal management.

With high production yields and improved cost structure, Samsung Display is expected to strengthen its leadership in the emerging IT OLED segment. Market observers say laptops and AI PCs could become the next major growth drivers for the OLED industry, positioning this launch as a key milestone in the race for market dominance.
