[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Young-taek] A Coupang Rocket Delivery courier collapsed and passed away at his home on May 28. The deceased, Seul-ki Jung, was in his 40s and his family suspects overwork as the cause of his death.

The bereaved family recently held a press conference titled "Condemnation of Coupang for the Death of a Delivery Worker Due to Overwork" in front of Coupang's headquarters in Songpa-gu, Seoul.

The family stated, "Coupang's nighttime delivery workers are pressed for time as they have to make three round trips between the camp and delivery points daily, while also performing sorting tasks. There are messages showing that the deceased was also asked to assist other delivery workers."

The task force supporting the family reported that Jung once sent a message to a Coupang agency stating he was "running like a dog."

It was revealed that Seul-ki Jung had not been enrolled in industrial accident or employment insurance for nearly a year after joining the company. Progressive Party lawmaker Hye-kyung Jeong pointed out that although Jung had signed a transportation contract with Good Logistics, a contractor of Coupang Logistics Services (CLS), on March 10, 2023, he was not enrolled in industrial accident and employment insurance until April 13, more than a year later.

Jung collapsed and died at his home on May 28. It has been highlighted that Coupang delivery workers are not adequately covered by industrial accident and employment insurance.

Lawmaker Jeong Hye-kyung emphasized, "The failure to enroll in industrial accident and employment insurance and the non-use of standard contracts are issues that the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport must clearly oversee. We demand that the government strengthen its supervision and hold the primary contractor accountable for cases of overwork-related deaths."
