[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) said on Wednesday that it has raised its consumer alert level to “Warning” after confirming cases of secondary damage, including voice phishing and smishing, linked to the recent personal data breach at Coupang.

According to the FSS, fraudsters have been exploiting public anxiety by referencing identity theft, criminal misuse of leaked data, and compensation claims related to the breach. Recent scams commonly involve impersonation of government agencies such as prosecutors’ offices, police, and the Fair Trade Commission.

Scammers pose as officials handling data breach response efforts and use false pretenses — including “verification of damage” or “online registry access” — to lure victims into accessing phishing websites.

Once victims enter these sites, fraudsters prompt them to input personal information under the guise of identity verification and induce them to install malicious applications or remote-control software. If installed, such apps allow criminals to manipulate phone numbers, steal stored personal data, and track victims’ real-time locations.

Due to increasingly sophisticated scam scenarios, some victims have been persuaded to transfer funds under false claims such as summary prosecution deposits. The FSS reported that recent cases include financial losses of up to 11 million won.

The FSS urged consumers to remain vigilant and warned against providing personal information, installing suspicious applications, or responding to financial requests related to the data breach.
