[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Shares of SK Hynix and other high-bandwidth memory (HBM) related stocks have dropped significantly. This decline is attributed to Apple's decision to use Google's AI chips instead of those from NVIDIA. SK Hynix supplies HBM to NVIDIA.
On the 30th, SK Hynix's stock fell by 3.43% on the Korean Exchange. Other HBM-related stocks also suffered declines: Hanmi Semiconductor dropped by 6.33%, JUSUNG Engineering by 3.68%, Io-Techniques by 5.05%, and Techwing by 0.93%. SK Hynix's stock even fell by as much as 4.65% during the day. All these stocks experienced larger declines compared to the KOSPI (0.99%) and KOSDAQ (0.52%) indices. Notably, Samsung Electronics (0.25%) showed a smaller decline than the KOSPI index, highlighting the sharp drop in HBM-related stocks.
The decline was further exacerbated by heavy selling from foreign and institutional investors. Foreign investors sold 102.9 billion KRW of SK Hynix shares, while institutional investors sold 4.6 billion KRW worth. Additionally, institutional investors sold 700 million KRW of Hanmi Semiconductor, 5.1 billion KRW of JUSUNG Engineering, and 900 million KRW of Techwing.
The drop in SK Hynix's share price is linked to Apple's announcement that it will use Google's AI chips for its AI model training instead of NVIDIA's. Currently, NVIDIA's latest GPUs dominate the AI chip market with over 80% market share. As major tech companies diversify their AI chip suppliers, NVIDIA and other companies in the AI chip value chain are experiencing impacts from these shifts.
