[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] Amid rising concerns over electric vehicle (EV) battery safety, a fire broke out in a parked Kia EV6 in Geumsan, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea, early on August 6. The incident adds to the growing list of EV fire reports and highlights the need for enhanced safety measures.

According to police and fire authorities, the fire started around 5 a.m. in a parking tower in Geumsan-eup. Residents reported the blaze, prompting a response from the fire department. A total of 12 fire trucks and 35 personnel were dispatched, and the fire was extinguished after 1 hour and 37 minutes. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

Firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to nearby vehicles and removed the EV from the parking tower before fully extinguishing the blaze. The vehicle was being leased by a person in their 50s, who reported parking and charging the car the previous evening around 7 p.m.

Authorities suspect that the fire may be related to a battery issue and plan to conduct a joint investigation to determine the cause. The incident underscores growing concerns about the safety of electric vehicle batteries, especially as their adoption increases.
